FAQ
Q:
Do I need to be a dancer or have previous dance experience to participate in Dance/Movement Therapy?
A:
No. You do not need any previous dance experience to participate in this form of therapy. Dance/Movement Therapy is not based on the principles of good vs. bad or talented vs. novice. It is based on the principle that engaging in a creative therapeutic process is paramount to healing.
Q:
What might a session look like- will I be dancing the whole time or can we also utilize talk therapy?
A:
Individual Dance/Movement Therapy sessions are based on the unique needs of each individual. Both session time and overall treatment will look different for everyone. At the beginning of therapy, it is important to work on building rapport and establishing a sense of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship. An individual may take weeks, months, or years to come to a place where they feel comfortable moving/dancing with another in the therapeutic relationship. Others may begin moving/dancing earlier in the process. It’s all okay- because there really is no right or wrong! It is necessary to recognize that your process is unique to you. It is also important to consider that there are many forms of movement and variation within that. And while it may not always look or feel like "dance", there will likely be a movement component. For example, you may simply notice shifts in you posture or nuances within your non-verbal communication. We all move differently, and that is a beautiful part of dance and movement. Talk therapy may be utilized in many or some of your sessions, dependent upon your needs and process.
Q:
How can Dance/Movement Therapy help me?
A:
There is movement and rhythm all around us, every day. Non-verbal communication plays a significant role in our daily lives and in our relationships. Movement ranges from the subtlest shift in posture, to large gestures and rhythmic dance. There is significant variation and dynamic range in movement and in dance. Many people engage in creative outlets throughout life to express and engage in social activities with others. Dance/Movement Therapy can be used to establish, or re-establish a sense of relatedness to self and others. It is believed that what we experience in the mind, we also experience in the body. Thus, working with the body in creative movement can help make the unconscious available. Dance/Movement Therapy can be beneficial for many who wish to explore, relate and express through a creative, body-level experience in individual treatment or as a form of group therapy. Dance/Movement Therapy may help to better understand underlying issues affecting many aspects of your daily life.
Q:
What is some history behind Dance/Movement Therapy? How long has it been around?
A:

There are six graduate level Dance/Movement Therapy programs in the US. See www.ADTA.org for additional information or contact me.
